Thankful

Standing around the dinner table yesterday, after prayers, we each took turns expressing our current thanks. I have to admit that as I reflected on the abundance in this country, represented by our holiday, I couldn’t help thinking about my new friends, family and village in Malawi. What I remember is their positive approach to the day-to-day lack that is such a big part of theirs lives. What I found strong was their spirit of determination and ability to do more than get by on less than what some would consider the minimum requirements for daily living. What I liked most was the unconditional love expressed by the children and adults in this, “The Warm Heart of Africa.” I am thankful to VoiceFlame for the opportunity meet and be of service to, these deserving fellow life travelers. What we left was the beginnings of a process that will bring empowerment, through literacy, to women and girls and a new approach to teaching writing to the teachers at Jacaranda School for Orphans. I am looking forward to returning there to reinforce what we taught the teachers at Jacaranda and to bring the AWA method to other schools in the area.
